Personally I am a story lover, like I said in my brief gamer history, the first game to truly rope me into games was in fact Final Fantasy 7, which I still love to this day....yeah I said the word love in relation to a game, call me what you wish :D
But back on topic, story is what sold that game to me, I never knew what I was letting myself into but the game wasn’t pinnacle on the story, I’ve played other games in the series after that one and even though the stories were great, the game play destroyed it, with linear play and the loss of free roaming. I guess if you want a story to be immersive with a linear construction, you should go into movies, because a game has to be involving in how it’s told, as well as how you play it!
The fact that the current generation of Game Developers seem to be completely buzzing off the idea of graphics, the space on the disk that was used for good game play and actual story seems to have been marginalised in place for bigger more intensive ways of making things glow. Don’t get me wrong, I really do like shiny things, mindless and even repetitive, but when you can see they are trying to palm you off with an “IMMENSE STORY” when actually it’s a bog standard story of guy meets girl, girl is abducted, girl turns out to be a boy, kind of story with immense glow to hide the fact that it’s a shambles, it wicks me off immensely!!
I don’t think a story has to be present within a game, all you need is a direction so that the consumer can follow it without any confusion, “ya what?!?!” moments are really not good, like in films when the paper boys bike blows into an awesome explosion when it hits a nearby lamp post, what.....why??!?
The problem is that stories are becoming increasingly ignored by the general public, most gamers are just click happy absent minded fools, all you need to do is check the Xbox and PS3 forums, “i liks dis game cuz its shiny a has the word “awesome” in teh titl” but when they do eventually “wake up and smell the coffee” there will be another generation below to line the pockets of the tedious game developers.....OH GOD I THINK IVE BEEN POWELL’ISED!!!111!!1!
